Summer Educational Series - 2010 (Contact Cheryl Wilson-Smith at 717-394-3994 or by email at Cheryl@Advanced-Counseling.com for more details) Effective Parenting through Divorce Today, many families experience the inherent difficulties associated with separation and divorce. While parents deal with the dissolution of their relationship with their partner, children often struggle emotionally during this time of family transition. Divorcing parents often face significant challenges in attempting to help their children through this difficult period in their lives. This presentation helps parents understand the emotional and social turmoil experienced by children and teens during and after divorce. While parents are experiencing emotional upheavals of their own, they need to help their children and teens deal with feelings of disbelief, anger, and resentment associated with the transition to a different family structure. Being able to understand the turmoil and apply effective communication techniques helps parents maintain meaningful relationships with their children and teens and move on toward acceptance. Understanding Evidence-Based Counseling Individuals seeking counseling services to help deal with personal problems are often faced with the daunting task of choosing an effective therapist. While academic degrees and professional credentials of practitioners may be important, neither of these provides sufficient evidence of counseling effectiveness. In the past few years, attention has shifted toward demands for greater accountability in the human services. In particular, private practitioners and community agencies are being encouraged to engage in responsible efforts to prove that the clinical services they provide are effective and beneficial to their clients. The emphasis on greater accountability has resulted in various approaches to evidence-based counseling services, some more rigorous than others. This presentation will examine the different types of evidence used to support counseling services and provide participants with indicators they should consider when seeking an effective counseling practitioner. |
