Dissociation is a common trauma response in which the mind disconnects from thoughts, feelings, memories, or sense of self as a way to survive overwhelming experiences. It exists on a spectrum — from mild “spacing out” to severe forms such as depersonalization, derealization, dissociative amnesia, or Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID).
At ACRS we understand dissociation as a brilliant protective strategy of the nervous system. Our psychotraumatology-informed approach focuses on restoring safety first, then gently processing the underlying trauma so dissociation is no longer needed.
We create individualized, phase-oriented plans:
Most often yes, especially when it is chronic or severe. Therapy helps resolve the root trauma while building present-moment safety.
Yes. With skilled, trauma-informed care many people experience significant reduction in dissociative symptoms and greater presence in daily life.
Absolutely. Many clients feel safer doing this deeply personal work from their own regulated environment.
We use extensive grounding resources, titration (small steps), and continuous nervous system monitoring so processing never overwhelms your window of tolerance.
